1987年発売のMSX2版「メタルギア」に登場する、初の核搭載二足歩行重戦車。（※１）
娘・エレンと共にアウターヘブンに誘拐されたDr.ペトロヴィッチが、ビッグ・ボスの命により、アウターヘブン内・ビル３地下100階にて開発を進めていた。
アウターヘブンが世界に対し軍事的有為を示すための開発であったが、実際、この兵器の「どこからでも核攻撃ができる」という特性は世界中の軍事バランス、核抑止バランスを一気に崩す可能性を秘めたものであった。そのため、この機体の完成・運用は早くから各国に懸念されていたと思われる。
作戦名「OPERATION INTRUDE N312」においてFOX HOUND隊員、グレイ・フォックスにより、その存在が初めて公式に確認された。（ただし、古くからグレイ・フォックスがビッグ・ボスの腹心であった事を考えると、これもダミー・オペレーションであった可能性も考えられる）
機体そのものは完成していたが、稼働前にソリッド・スネークの手により破壊、実戦投入はされなかった。
弱点は脚部で、ここに特定の順番でプラスチック爆弾を設置する事のみが、TX-55メタルギアの破壊を可能とする。
TX-55メタルギアのデザインはエンディングのスタッフロールにグラフィック・デザインとして名前を連ねている「MASAMI TABATA」「AZUSA FUJIMOTO」のどちらか、もしくは両名と思われる。なお、そのスタイリングには当然ながら小島秀夫監督の意向が色濃く反映されているものと推察される。
また、「メタルギア・ソリッド」発表時には、新川洋司氏の手によってリファインされたTX-55メタルギアも発表されており、「メタルギア・ソリッド プレミアムパッケージ」内包の冊子や、「THE ART OF METAL GEAR SOLID」（発行・発売／コナミ）にてそのイラストを目にすることができる。
※1：MSX版メタルギアのユーザーズマニュアルには「これが完成すると、地球上のあらゆるところからの核攻撃が可能になる」と記載されているため、「TX-55が世界初の核搭載歩行戦車」と受けとれる表記であった。しかし、後に発表された過去を描いたシリーズ作品において核搭載型のメタルギアが登場するため、実質的にTX-55は「初の核搭載歩行戦車」ではなくなっている。

ガン・モジュールは、1.5cmバルカン（ガトリング）砲２門と、20cmレーザー・キャノン１門を装備。実存するガトリング砲でサイズの近いものを探すと、ゼネラル・エレクトリック社のGAU-19/A(B)が口径12.7mmと最も近い。ただし、１門だけでもかなりのサイズがあるため、2門も搭載するのはかなりの無理筋。

The gun module is equipped with two 1.5cm Vulcan (Gatling) cannons and one 20cm laser cannon. Looking for an existing Gatling gun similar in size, General Electric's GAU-19/A(B) is the closest with a caliber of 12.7mm. However, since even one is quite large, it is quite impossible to install two.
